What are Tzitzits (Numbers 15:38-41)

October 19, 2020

According to the Scriptures, the Hebrew number is H6734 and means…
H6734 ציצת (tsı̂ytsith, tsee-tseeth’)
a floral or wing-like projection, i.e. a forelock of hair, a tassel
Root(s): H6731
H6731צץ ציץ tsı̂yts tsits (tseets, tseets)
properly glistening, that is, a burnished plate; also a flower (as bright colored); a wing (as gleaming in the air): – blossom, flower, plate, wing.
Root(s): H6992
H6992 צוּץH ((tsûts, tsoots)
A primitive root; to twinkle, that is, glance; by analogy to blossom (figuratively flourish): – bloom, blossom, flourish, shew self.
As we can see in the Hebrew definition Tzitziyot are a blossom. It has 8 strings that look like it blossoms.

The Design Of The Tzitziyot
You can go online and find Tzitziyot made in many different ways and with different colors. While the Scriptures do not give us specific instructions on how Tzitziyot are to be made, there are 2 specific criteria for them given in Scripture.
In Deut 22:11 it tells us that the Tzitziyot are not to be made of 2 different materials (Wool & Cotton). Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together. This Scripture is given right before the Scripture that says about putting the Tzitziyot on the four corners of our garment. Thus, showing us 1 criterion for them.
The second is that it must have at least one blue thread in it according to Numbers 15:38. Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: Those are the only two direct Scriptures references that show us how they are to be made.
The Scriptures don’t say that they cannot include any other colors. As a matter of fact, if you look on-line there is ones with any different color and blue combination.

Reasons For Wearing Them
The first reason is it’s commanded in the Old Testament – Numbers 15:37-40 And YHWH spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of YHWH, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring: That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your Elohim.
In verse 38 we see it says “Throughout their generations”. Here’s a question…Why do we say this term applies to us with other Scriptures and not this one? Are we selectively applying Scriptures?
Here’s a few examples:
Sabbath: Exodus 31:12-16
Passover: Exodus 12:14
First Fruits: Lev 23:14
Pentecost: Lev 23:21
Day of Atonement: Lev 23:31

Now, before you say well that was in the Old Testament. Here’s the 2nd reason…
YHWH Ha Mashiach wore them
Matthew 9:20
Matthew 14:36
Mark 6:56
Luke 8:44

Significance Of Wearing Them
Reminds us to keep YHWH’s Commandments
Numbers 15:39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of YHWH, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:

Obedience To YHWH
It amazes me how many believers choose to think of the Scriptures as a trail mix. They tend to want to be obedient to some Scriptures, while they ignore or explain away others.
The Scriptures tell us over and over again that we should be obedient to YHWH and His word. Here’s just one example.. Deuteronomy 11:26-28 Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of YHWH your Elohim, which I command you this day: And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of YHWH your Elohim, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.
This is one of many Scriptures that tell us we are to obedient to YHWH and His Word.
The Scriptures are not a trail mix. We cannot pick and choose which ones to obedient to. If we are to obedient to one then we need to be obedient to all. `Let’s look at a couple of Scriptures…
James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
Matthew 5:17-19 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

How To Wear Them
So, is there instructions in the Scriptures as to how we’re supposed to wear Tzitziyot? Actually, the Word does give a few Scriptures on how we are to wear them.
In Deuteronomy 22:12 it tells us to wear them on the 4 quarters of our vesture. Now let me explain something about this. In the Scriptures the people wore a garment that was designed with four corners on it. This was worn under their regular garment. Of course, I understand that that our garments today are not designed like this. After all, who ever seen a four-corner pair of pants? So, YHWH understands that we can only wear them on our garment the best way that we can. I myself wear them either pinned to or looped through the belt loops of my pants. Also, in Numbers 15:38 it says…Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue:

How Not To Wear Them
Along with Scriptures on how we should wear them there is also a Scripture on how not to wear them. Matthew 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, Please understand, this Scripture is not saying that we can’t have long Tzitziyot. I myself have 2 sets of Tzitziyot. The set I have on is a short set and the set you see here is a longer set. What Messiah was trying to get across here is that we should not wear them to bring glory or attention to ourselves. We should be wearing them to remind us of His commandments.

Should Woman Wear Tzitziyot
This is a hot topic when it comes to wearing tzitziyot. There are many out there that say that the wearing of tzitziyot is just for men. While the Scriptures do have thing that are just for the men to do (Ex: priestly duties, blowing of the trumpet, doing sacrifices, etc.) the wearing of tzitziyot is not one of them. No where can you find a Scripture that states that woman are not to wear tzitziyot. Numbers 15:37-38a And YHWH spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel We see in this Scripture that it is referencing the children of Israel. Now, I understand in the Hebrew word for children is H1121 “Ben” which means a son. It also includes grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc. so, we see it is not just limited to men. Again, no where can you find a Scripture that states that woman cannot wear tzitziyot.

Acts 2:38

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Yahwah Ha Mashiach for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
